Abortion

Abortion. Here’s another topic some people might be uncomfortable with, so once again, feel free to skip it.

As some of you might be beginning to suspect from my entry on gay marriage, I am a liberal. Now don’t get me wrong, there are some topics I’m a bit iffy on, and I’m no extremist. The point stands though, that I am very much pro-choice on many subjects. This is one of them.

I do believe that life is precious. I do believe that babies are not only cute, they are also innocents and something to be treasured. Still, I don’t think it’s right to force a woman, any woman, to go through the ordeal of pregnancy and childbirth against her will. Let’s face it folks, most pregnancy prevention methods aren’t 100% perfect. Condoms can break, pills aren’t always effective, accidents happen. Heck, even abstinence isn’t a perfect guarantee when you consider the ugly truth that is rape. Hard as people may try to avoid it, chances are some of them will still get pregnant. It happens.

Moving on, let’s face it, pregnancy and childbirth aren’t exactly pleasant. For some people it’s easier than others, but for many it can be a horrible ordeal to go through. Nausea comes frequently, Hormones go totally out of whack, and lets not forget that medical complications can sometime make pregnancy dangerous to the point of life threatening! People can die in childbirth! The rewards of having a baby can make the suffering and risk totally worth it for many women, but many others simply don’t want it to go through that! And let us not forget that sometimes a person simply isn’t in a position to raise a baby. They might be too young, or still in school, or simply not in a place financially to afford raising a child. Is it fair then to force a baby to be born into that sort of situation? I don’t think it is.

Again, we have the same problem as we had in gay marriage; some people try to force their pro-life beliefs on these women. People are always trying to illegalize abortion, to the point of attempting to make it a part of the constitution! What right do they have to do this? If you think abortion is wrong, then by all means, don’t have an abortion. But don’t force your beliefs on everyone else! A woman has every right to do what she chooses with her own body. Nobody has a right to tell her otherwise.

P.S. Seriously, at the stage of pregnancy most people have abortions at, the fetus is hardly developed. A fetus may at one stage grow to become a little human, but at three weeks old I don’t think it can be considered a person yet. This is just my opinion though.
